Sunday Brunch at Commonwealth

lovely-tea-cups

I will be honest, I had completely forgotten about Commonwealth, the new gastropub in Columbia Heights. I was invited to the soft opening back in the Summer and was delighted by its take on British food (read: making British food actually taste good). I also really liked the fact that Jamie Leeds and his partner Sandy Lewis vowed to use a lot of fresh, local and in season ingredients in their dishes. But somehow the restaurant fell out of my mind until I was racking my brain for a Sunday brunch option. It was cold outside and a bit gloomy, so what better back drop for brunch than a British inspired pub? The fact that Commonwealth was only two stops away on the Metro didn’t hurt either, so we headed out after dropping off my purchases from the Takoma Park Farmers Market (for more on my market visit, head on over to DC Foodies).

Banana Coconut Pecan Bread

finished-bread-better

There it was Christmas Eve and I was standing in my Mother’s kitchen mulling over what to do for Christmas morning breakfast. My mom really isn’t a baker, so ingredients were limited. But she just so happened to have some bananas, some pecans (from her CSA!!!) and some coconut all lying around. There was also buttermilk I had bought for the Red Velvet Cupcakes I was going to make for Christmas the next day. So I decided to whip together a banana bread with some coconut and pecans thrown in…now all I had to do was orient myself with Mom’s kitchen.

Beignets

beignets-and-coffe-mug-best

There are probably a list of things I shouldn’t be allowed to do without adult supervision:

  • Play with matches
  • Go to the grocery store (I inevitably buy way more than originally intended)
  • Okay, anything involving fire

After making these beignets, we should probably add deep frying to this list.

I Ain’t No Challah Back Girl

beautiful-loaf

Let’s just all be honest here. Half the reason I even made this bread was so I could title the post “I Ain’t No Challah Back Girl”. It’s a great pun, right? No? Did you just question my pun abilities? That’s soo not cool.

Early Sunday Ramblings…with Apple Ricotta Pancakes

pancakes-better

I love my weekends, for so many reasons. When I don’t over plan, my weekends are my own. I get to putter around my house if I choose, dressed in my favorite pajamas and pouring through my cookbooks. I have the time to try something new and then retry it if it doesn’t work the first time. I can read without the guilt of thinking “I really should be getting my gym bag/lunch/clothes ready for tomorrow”. I can play on Facebook for hours because I have no place to go (FYI, “Adventures in Shaw” has its own Facebook site, so feel free to become a fan!). I can pour over the world newspapers, mindlessly munching on a scone or bagel while reading about things outside of the United States. I get my CSA box, which for me is like getting a Christmas present every Saturday morning. I don’t have to answer my work Blackberry, but can chat all night with Liz should I choose on Pinkie Lee. But there is one very special reason my weekends have become so very precious to me…

Chocolate Coconut Walnut Scones

Dear Santa,

I’ve been good this year…well, I mean I’ve been fairly good. Okay, I’ve been about 49 percent good this year, but considering my track record that’s like, super good. But I digress…this letter isn’t about the adult me. This is about the Shaw Girl of Christmas past. The sweet, happy, innocent little Shaw Girl who believed in you and was really, really good. Remember the letter I sent you when I was five? You must remember because I even included glitter in the envelope as an enticement (well, the glitter I didn’t eat…I had a thing for craft supplies at that age). That was the year I pleaded for an Easy Bake oven…the ultimate gift to a budding foodie. How I yearned for an Easy Bake oven…something to bring my delicious creations to life. My friend Cheryl had one but she wouldn’t let me use it…she mocked my lack of Easy Bake oven status. But I knew if I was good enough and if my letter was heart felt enough, I too would have an Easy Bake oven to call my own…boy was I wrong.

Brioche in a Snap!

brioches-and-tea

When I was little, we only had the major holidays off from school. Columbus Day? Spent sitting in Mrs. Slusher’s class listening to her find sexual content in every book we read (seriously, she even made a case for what Huck Finn and Jim were doing all that time in the boat on the river…disturbing for a high school literature class). President’s Day? Of course school had to be in! That was a perfect opportunity to learn about our presidential history. So imagine my surprise to find out as a grown up, I get such unexpected holidays off! In fact, it didn’t even hit me that I had Tuesday November 11th off until a co-worker mentioned it the day after election day. Veteran’s Day off? Sweet! Speaking of sweet, have you met a brioche yet? No? Well, let me make a formal introduction…and show you how easy it is to make.

Walnut Apple Dutch Boy

Outside of Christmas, Fall is my favorite time of year. After the oppressive heat of the Summer, it’s nice to have a cool crispness in the air. And the beauty of watching the leaves change colors is almost indescribable. Going on a long, directionless car ride surrounded by beautiful trees was one of my most treasured childhood memories. We’d get into the car and drive around Augusta, looking out at the trees and trying not to get on each other’s nerves (my sister wasn’t a fan of younger Shaw Girl…seriously, she tried to give me away on several occasions). But the best thing about Fall to me is the new crop of produce I get to play with…and a cooler kitchen! You try gathering up the motivation to bake or cook in 98 degree heat…

Apple Danish Braid: A Daring Baker’s Challenge

I was not about to make the same mistakes I made with my very first Daring Baker challenge. I had most definitely learned my lessons last time and applied them whole heartedly with this new challenge. So on a Friday night before going to bed, I fully read the recipe, jotting down each time the dough required chilling. This helped me to calculate the total time needed to make this bread. I made out a bit of a schedule, made sure I had all the ingredients and set off on my baking adventure the following Saturday…during a fucking heat wave in DC.
